Angels in America: Millennium Approaches
The 2017 revival of Angels in America - A Gay Fantasia on National Themes quickly became the fastest-selling show in the history of London's National Theatre. Directed by two-time Tony Award winner Marianne Elliott, the widely praised production now transfers to New York where performances began on February 23, 2018 at the Neil Simon Theatre.
Tony Kushner's epic play made waves at its world premiere in San Francisco in 1991 and on Broadway in 1993, ultimately winning both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for "Best Play". It also went on to be adpated by HBO for television in 2003, winning the Golden Globe and Emmy Award for "Best Miniseries".
The production also marks the first-ever Broadway revival for Angels in America and features original London stars such as two-time Tony Award winner Nathan Lane and Oscar & Tony nominee Andrew Garfield. The Broadway production remains as slick and stylish as it did when it entertained full houses in London, with its stunning, often neon-infused lighting design by Paule Constable and effortlessly shifting set design by Ian MacNeil.
With stellar, frequently heart-wrenching performances by Lane as Roy Cohn, Garfield as Prior Walter and Olivier Award winner Denise Gough as Harper Pitt, backed up by a tour-de-force performance by Susan Brown as Hannah Pitt and several other characters, Angels in America may well be showered with acting trophies by the time the 2018 Awards season is over.
Set during the AIDS epidemic of the mid-1980's in New York City, the sprawling themes of Angels in America remain as urgent and as topical as ever in today's fragile social and political climate. (plus)

Commentaire: A l'époque de Cohan, l’intrigue légère était une bonne excuse pour justifier un certain nombre de chansons ingrates et la soirée était parsemée d’agréables routines de danse. Mais 80 ans plus tard, les critiques ont été d’humeur généralement grincheuse et le spectacle a joué une seule représentation officielle à Broadway. Peut-être que l’Alvin Theatre était une trop grande salle pour ce qui était essentiellement un musical intime, mais inversement un lieu plus petit, même à guichet fermé, n’aurait probablement pas permis au spectacle de réaliser un profit. Presse: "Mr. Roosevelt should feel very happy about his part in "I'd Rather Be
Right." On the whole, George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart feel very
tender about him. Apart from their affectionate treatment of him in the
plot and lines of their musical comedy they have engaged George M.
Cohan to impersonate the President, which is a dispensation devoutly
to be desired by anyone who wants to please an audience...Mr. Cohan
has never been in better form. The audience was his, and lovingly his,
all last evening.
If the authors had held council with Jim Farley, they could hardly have
felt in better humor about our country. Although advance reports seemed
to indicate that "I'd Rather Be Right" might discharge a lampoon at the
follies of current politics, it turns out to be a pleasant-spoken musical
comedy that leisurely ambles away the evening. There is some brisk
stuff here and there - a capital object lesson in the effects of taxation,
which is worthy of the Living Newspaper technique; a quip or two about
the Federal Theater, "Wherever we see three people together we are
supposed to give a show"; a poke at Walter Lippmann and a few
frolicsome skirmishes with the Supreme Court. But there have been
Marx Brothers shows in the past that were more hilariously antic than
this pastoral in Central Park, and "Of Thee I Sing" was enormously
more versatile and dynamic. "I'd Rather Be Right" is playful; and,
all questions of political opinion to one side, that is hardly enough for
